Go ahead and ask your plumbing questions to the Round Rock plumbing pros!

We’re going to try and answer some of the most commonly asked plumbing questions.

Knowledge is power! Especially when it comes to your residential plumbing systems – because that stuff can get confusing pretty quick.

Let’s jump right in.

1. How can I check if I have leaky pipes?

Everyone should know how to check for plumbing leaks in their house, and this one is easy too. If you have a hunch that you have a leak in your home, just go out to your water meter and record the level. Make sure that no one uses water for a few hours before checking the level – otherwise it can skew the results. Then, go back and check the meter again. It’s easiest to do this when everyone goes to bed, then check it first thing in the morning.

And you guessed it – if the water level changed and no one has been using water in the house – then you probably have a leak. Call Round Rock Plumbing to have it taken care of right away!

2. What are the most common causes of pipe corrosion?

Pipe corrosion can be cause by a large number of things, however almost always it’s related to water quality. These are some things that can affect your water quality:

  • Chemicals in the water
  • The amount of oxygen in the water
  • The pH of the water
  • The temperature of the water
  • The water pressure and speed the water moves through the pipes

Sometimes you need pipe replacement if they’re really old.

3. What do I do if my toilet overflows?

Overflowing toilets are usually caused by a leak in your tanks fill valve or a deterioration of the shaft / wire that sets the water fill level. Whatever the cause, call Round Rock Plumbing for the solution!

4. Should I repair or replace leaky faucets?

If you’re able to repair the faucet and even restore the shine on its finish, faucet repair is the best option. However, if your faucet is too badly corroded, and too old to find the replacement parts then faucet replacement might be an easier option (and quite possibly cheaper!).

5. What cause a faucet to leak?

When we fix leaky faucets the most common thing we find is corroded O-rings, valves or gaskets. These are the parts of the faucet that hold the water back until the faucet is opened to let the water through. So if one of these seals is corroded or worn down then that leaves room for the water to get back and constantly leak. I can hear that annoying “drip-drip” sound now…

Inspect all the components of your faucet – you should see healthy looking washers, O-rings and seals. You might be able to find exactly what you need to replace, and can find precise parts at hardware stores and put the faucet all back together. If everything goes well and according to plan then your faucet should be back to normal. If not, then call Round Rock Plumbing and let us fix it for you hassle free!

6. Is there anything I should NOT put down my garbage disposal?

Yes – in fact, there are a lot of things that should never go down your garbage disposal as it could clog up your sink pipes. Fibrous foods like celery, artichokes, asparagus, and onion skins could wrap around the blades and choke them. You should also avoid putting down:

  • Potato skins
  • Bone fragments and eggshells
  • Banana peels
  • Fats / grease
  • Onion skins
  • Unpopped popcorn kernels
  • Fruit pits and seeds
  • Stringy vegetables

7. My garbage disposal broke down – what do I do?

Before going out and buying a new garbage disposal, try seeing if you can unclog or fix the one you’ve got. First, turn it off, disconnect it from power and check to see if something is jamming it – maybe some food debris or a spoon. If you don’t find anything, plug it back in and press the RESET button to fix it. Finally, check the breaker. If all else fails then call Round Rock Plumbing to come and take a look!
